SCBC Alumni | Esther Watts – Class of 2016

Esther graduated from South Coast Baptist College (SCBC) in 2016 and pursued her passion for medical science at The University of Western Australia. She earned a Bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate degree in Medical Science, completing her studies in 2022.

Following her academic journey, Esther undertook her internship at Fiona Stanley Hospital. A standout moment during this time was her six-month placement in Broome, working across the Kimberley region. Here, she had the privilege of learning from exceptionally skilled clinicians in areas such as emergency medicine, intensive care, anesthetics, obstetrics, and general medicine.

Currently, Esther is practicing as a doctor at Fiona Stanley Hospital and also works at Fremantle and Rockingham Hospitals. She finds particular joy in these “full circle moments,” as they bring back memories of childhood visits to Rockingham Hospital after school injuries—a testament to her lifelong connection to the community she now serves.

Reflecting on her time at South Coast Baptist College, she realizes the holistic education she received—balancing academics, sports, and Christian teaching—laid the foundation for her personal and professional growth. This well-rounded approach instilled a desire to pursue passions beyond medicine, including social sports, football, and faith-building activities like the Christian Union at university.

During her school years, she was also blessed with several Christian mentors who played a pivotal role in her faith journey. Their biblically based teachings provided an essential foundation for navigating university and beyond.

Esther’s years at SCBC were filled with unforgettable moments, from inter-school athletics carnivals and dissecting cow hearts in human biology to debating tournaments and outdoor education camps. A standout memory was learning metalwork and welding under the guidance of her father, Mr. Watts, who still teaches at SCBC. Those creative experiences have taken on new meaning in her current orthopedic surgery rotation, where the skills and tools used in crafting and repairing metal parallel those used in repairing fractured bones and replacing joints.

As a Resident Medical Officer, Esther is exploring a wide range of specialties through 10-week rotations, with notable interests in surgery, psychiatry, and rural medicine. She aspires to specialize in General Practice with a focus on Sports Medicine, while continuing to serve rural communities across Australia. Above all, her commitment remains grounded in serving Jesus and following the path He has set for her.
